Regular Dental Check ups: the key to saving money at the Dentist Office.

The best way to keep dental costs down is by having regular 6 month dental check ups and cleanings.  Many people feel the by not going to the dentist that they are going to save money, but this is not true in most cases.  In the case of dental cost, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Plaque and tartar start building up in the mouth within 1 to 3 days after having your teeth cleaned.  Plaque and tartar build up is  the main cause for dental disease of the mouth, including cavities and periodontal disease.

Regular check ups and cleanings allow the dentist to monitor the health of the teeth and gums.  Regular cleanings allow the removal of plaque and tartar and detection of cavities.  This help keep gum disease and cavities to a minimum.

In my experience,  the most expensive visits to the dentist is due to lack of regular check  up with cleanings.  Most of these visits are emergency situations due to extreme pain are require more extensive procedures to correct the problem.

These visits usually need root canals, extractions, or crowns.  These are some of the more expensive procedures that dentists perform.  Many of these procedures and the resulting treatment for these procedures can be avoided by having regular 6 month check ups and cleanings.

In my own life, I never had regular check ups as a child.  I only went to the dentist when I was having dental pain.  Every 3-4 years I would go and have 5-10 fillings done.  This was not pleasant, but I thought this was everyone’s dental experience.

After going to dental school at Emory University School of Dentistry, I started having check ups and cleanings every 6 months.  Since that time, I have not had a single new cavity in almost 30 years.  This is not the norm, but I do see fewer cavities in my patients that have their 6 month check ups and cleanings.

Most dental insurances will pay for a check up and cleaning every 6 months.  For those people with or without insurance, having a check up and cleaning is the best investment 1n  and the best way to keep costs down for your dental care.
