What is Periodontal, or Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease, also known as periodontitis, is a generalized term for any inflammatory and infectious disease that affects the gums and supportive tissue surrounding the teeth.  The gingival (gum) changes are the same as those that occur with gingivits, with same clinical signs as gingivitis

If gingivitis is left untreated and the accumulated plaque and tartar are not removed, it can progress into periodontal disease.  This progression leads to the destruction of the fibers that attach the gingiva (gums) to the bone.  As these fibers are destroyed, the bacteria in the plaque and tartar along with the irritants secreted by the plaque and tartar can now reach the supportive bone around the tooth.

This process leads to destruction of the supportive bone.  The bone destruction progresses in the direction toward the apex (base)  of the tooth along the root structure of the tooth.  As more supportive bone is destroy, the tooth becomes more mobile, or loose.  If this process is not stopped, the tooth will eventually be lost.  The main cause of tooth loss in adult is not due to decay, but from the effects of periodontal disease.  Gingivitis is caused by plaque and tartar above the gumline.  Periodontal disease is cause by plaque and tartar located below the gumline.

Treatment of periodontal disease in the early stages with little, or no bone destruction, consist of aggressive cleaning of the root structure and affected gum tissue.  This treatment is called root planing and scaling.  In the more advanced stages, surgical intervention is required.  The best way to prevent periodontal disease is to maintain a good daily oral hygiene regiment and have your teeth cleaned professionally every 6 months.
